Freddy’s Journey through UWC Costa Rica

From Venezuela to the World: Freddy García’s Transformational Journey

Freddy García was born in Barcelona, along Venezuela’s Caribbean coast, in the heart of a family that taught him to look beyond hos circumstances. Though he had never traveled abroad, Freddy was already dreaming of serving the world. From a young age, he balanced academics with social action - representing his school in Math Olympiads launching “Psico-Rutas”, a mental health initiative for teenagers, and volunteering with a global NGO advocating for youth dignity across borders.

His commitment needed wings - and UWC Costa Rica became the launchpad.

The journey wasn’t easy. Bureaucratic challenges delayed his arrival to campus by over a month. Freddy stepped into a life that had already started without him, yet he was quickly embraced by a community that saw his potential. The Grieg Foundation played a key role, offering academic, financial, and personal support that transformed his integration into a story of resilience.

His commitment needed wings - and United World College Costa became that launchpad

Today, as a Grieg Scholar of the Class of 2025, Freddy confidently speaks English, shares thoughtful ideas, and has developed a strong sense of purpose to serve humanity. The multicultural environment at UWC Costa Rica has profoundly shaped him. His gratitude extends far beyond words -it’s reflected in his plans: after receiving five full scholarships to study International Business in the United States, Freddy dreams of returning to UWC as a professional to inspire the next generation of leaders. Even more, he envisions joining - and one day leading - the Venezuelan National Committee to help select future changemakers and peacemakers.

Freddy didn’t just receive an opportunity - he turned it into a promise of transformation
