Planet Ocean

Who: Bergen Vitensenter

What:
Planet Ocean

Where: Bergen, Norway

Project period:
2025-2026

About the project:

The UN’s Ocean Decade is summarized with: “The science we need for the ocean we want.” At VilVite, we are proud to contribute to this vision. In summer 2026, we will open Planet Ocean (Norwegian: Havplaneten) – a 400 m² interactive exhibition exploring the ocean and water. Guests will embark on an immersive journey beneath the surface, designed around topics we know our visitors need to learn more about, Planet Ocean will offer engaging, hands-on experiences that deepen their understanding of our blue planet: Climate and the Ocean. The ocean regulates Earth’s climate, and we will uncover some of its secrets—from microscopic algae producing oxygen, to vast ocean currents distributing heat and nutrients.

Through an immersive experience, visitors will explore how climate change affects ocean chemistry, ecosystems, and currents, and why action matters. Shipping and Technology: How does technology shape the relationship between humans and the sea? Guests will simulate transporting goods across oceans and explore the deep sea using a ROV.

These exhibits highlight innovation as the key to sustainable use of the ocean, while also showcasing career paths in marine and maritime industries. The Water Cycle and Properties of Water Children will explore waves, bubbles, dams, and whirlpools through open play with water. Creativity through play is at the core of learning at VilVite. Kids will also learn how water supports life and serves as a renewable energy source. Biodiversity and Food from the Sea

To protect the ocean, children must first learn to love the ocean. By encountering familiar sea creatures and discovering new species, young visitors will build a sense of connection and responsibility. Guests will also learn about aquaculture and sustainable seafood. Ocean Planet will equip the next generation with the insight, knowledge and perspectives – important tools they need to shape a sustainable ocean future.

About the organisation:

Every year VilVite is visited by nearly 125,000 guests. That makes VilVite one of the largest science centres in Scandinavia. Families, schools, and visitors of all ages explore science and technology in a safe and engaging way through interactive exhibits, school programs, and weekend and holiday activities. We are also visited by corporations for team buildings, workshops, and other events. Our mission is to strengthen recruitment to STEM education and create a future where everyone is explorers and creators!
