Robust Mamma

Who: Bergen Kvinnehelse

What:
Robust Mamma

Where: Bergen

Project Period: 2025

About the project

Pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period are characterized by physical and psychological stress. This can include morning sickness, fatigue, pelvic girdle pain, pelvic floor disorders, soreness and inflammation in connection with breastfeeding, psychological stress and worries. For many, the problems after birth are unpleasant, but short-lived and temporary. Other women experience health challenges before and after birth, which persist and can cause severe pain and functional impairment.

The goal of the project is to contribute to better physical and mental health among first-time mothers in Bergen. To reach that goal, we want to offer interdisciplinary follow-up during pregnancy and after giving birth. It will be organized as a "package-deal" where each individual will receive: - a physical pregnancy and birth preparation course (together with partner) - a physical maternity course (together with partner) - the opportunity to participate in support groups led by different professionals where they can ask questions, but also get support and most importantly meet others in the same situation.

The project is unique because there are no interdisciplinary (physiotherapist, psychologist, nutritionist and midwife) services that take care of these women. There is generally little provision for mothers in the time after giving birth. In a phase of life where the main focus is on the child, this is quickly downgraded or forgotten, and a problem that could have been picked up and worked on in an early phase is given room to develop.

The effect of the mother's health on the child's health is underestimated: if the mother is well, the child is well. We want to show the public that preparatory courses, interdisciplinary, the right professional competence and support groups are the way to go. A support network that picks up if there is something that needs to be picked up, that provides security and strengthens the woman in her new phase of life.

 About the organization

Bergen Kvinnehelse is Bergen's first and only multidisciplinary women's health clinic. We opened our doors in January 2025 and have a vision to offer health care to women in all phases of life. Our competent team consists of physical therapists, a psychologist, a sexologist, a midwife, a clinical family therapist/couple therapist and a clinical nutritionist. We offer individual follow up, but also different types of groups/classes.
