A Transformative Chapter

Hi, I'm Deepa Sapkota. I'm from Surkhet, Nepal. I'm a Grieg Foundation Scholar, Class of 2025 in United World College, Costa Rica.

My background is a little different than others. I have been part of the SOS organization since I was three years old, following the death of my mother. SOS is an organisation that provides a loving home and financial support to vulnerable children.

Growing up, I was part of a family within SOS that included a mother and eight children including myself. SOS and the people there have shaped me. Everything I have learnt in my life, from focusing on my education to believing in close kinship and sharing bonds with people, I learnt in SOS. Despite facing adversity at a really young age, SOS allowed me to have a childhood.

After this amazing experience, I want to carry the spirit of UWC forwarded by learning, growing, and becoming an agent of change.

I was really nervous before arriving at United World College (UWC), Costa Rica, because I had never been to any foreign countries before. However, after arriving on campus, my teachers and my peers helped me to blend with the culture and the environment. At first, I was afraid I might not be able to enjoy life outside the campus because of my financial situation. But thanks to the Grieg Foundation scholarship, I was able to immerse myself in the culture beyond UWC.

Every moment has shaped my UWC journey

The UWC experience has been one of the most transformative chapters of my life. From late night conversations with my friends, to learning a dance for a performance, and even countless cups of coffee that kept me going through deadlines. Every moment has shaped my UWC journey. UWC has taught me how to balance my academic life and social life in a healthy way, allowing me to grow personally and intellectually. It has also taught me the importance of community and the importance of learning from each other. After this amazing experience, I want to carry the spirit of UWC forwarded by learning, growing, and becoming an agent of change. I will make sure to make this experience big.

For my further studies, I have a scholarship to go to St. Olaf College in the United States. I hope to explore majors related to human service and humanities, fields that allow me to make meaningful impact. No matter where life takes me, I'll continue to be part of the UWC community as an alumi by giving back and staying connected.

This life-changing journey wouldn't have been possible without Grieg Foundation. So thank you for making my dreams a reality. Thank you.
