Dreams take effort - and smart choices

I am Jorge from Bolivia. My city, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, is known for its many tourist attractions that showcase its natural beauty, hospitality, and positive outlook. My two favorite pastimes are spending time with my loved ones and reading and running with my friends.

I come from a family consisting of a younger sister, a father, and a mother who inspire me and remind me every day of the values that brought me here, with each of their calls since I started at UWC Costa Rica.

Before joining UWC, I led spiritual accompaniment processes focused on young people, known as Marcha. I also participated in a 10-day project in which I provided support to a remote community without cell coverage, helping rebuild a path to connect them to a distant area. Additionally, I initiated a project that motivated children to reduce their carbon footprint.

I applied to UWC because, since I was little, my goal has been to study abroad. I didn’t know how, but I knew it was what I longed for until I learned about UWC and fell in love with its vision and the idea of multiculturalism.

My favorite memory of UWC so far was a trip I took with two friends to a town far from the school, where we found a natural paradise. The place we went to was a hermitage where I felt at home and at peace. That day I learned a lot and remembered my home and my family, whom I left behind to pursue my dream.

At UWC Costa Rica, I have gained autonomy and independence in every sense of the word. This learning, with a lot of effort and stumbles along the way, has taught me about organization, study skills, time management, interpersonal relationships, and above all, that dreams are achieved with effort, but in an intelligent way.

Additionally, I would like to make a recap of my two semesters at UWC Costa Rica. With this, I can summarize my first semester as a time of academic and spiritual adaptation to an environment where everything happens quickly, but leaves you with experiences that are never forgotten; such as orientation week, each of the classes with high-level methodologies, all the meetings and events of the Latin family on campus, each of the community action days, and each of the extracurricular activities in which I have been part.

On the other hand, I could summarize my second semester in the academic area as a time of learning and hope for improvement. In the same way, in the extracurricular area, I could summarize it as a semester of unforgettable activities, such as the Firstie Show, Community Action Week, and the Pastdown show, in addition to the beginning as a leader of some activities on campus, such as the CAS of self-defense, Wellness Ambassador, and a tutoring project for students on campus.

On behalf of my family and myself, we thank the Grieg Foundation for this wonderful opportunity, which I intend to make the most of. This experience has led to enormous intellectual and spiritual growth for me over the past two semesters.
