Building Success Through Learning
Who: Frøya Basket
What: Leksehjelp
Where: Bergen, Norway
Project period: 2026-2029
About the project
Twice a week we will open Frøya Arena at 1.30 PM, giving our members an opportunity to go straight from school to Frøya Arena. In our gym they have an opportunity to relax or practice with some of our coaches or on their own. The youngest will eat dinner at 2.30 PM before they do their homework from 3.00 PM until 4.00 PM. Theirafter they will go and practice with their team. The older group will eat their dinner between 3.00 PM and 3.30 and they will start their homework/studies from 4.15 PM until 5.15 PM. They will have a short break before they start their team practices.
Participating in the project is free, but you have to be an active member of Frøya Basket. We follow the school calender which means that we start approximately september 1st and finish up around May 31st.
Our experience with the project after 4 years is that we have been able to reach out to many kids helping them with studies, but also guiding them to be a more concentrated pupil in school. We have over this period also been able build a trust with many of the families that participate in this project. Building trust with the families is very valuable for us both in the school project, but also in other aspects in our club.
Many of our participants has circumstances at home that makes it more difficult for them to get the help they need at home. This can be because of challenges with language, single parents that work several jobs or maybe not integrated well in the Norwegian society. We will work constantly to try to help where we can. For instance families has asked us to come with them to meetings with the school or social services.
