About the project

The Dale Oen Academy is a program dedicated to helping young people aged 15–20 who are outside education, training, or employment, or who are at risk of social exclusion. Through a unique combination of character development, mentoring, outdoor learning and practical experiences, the Academy helps participants regain confidence, build resilience, and discover new opportunities for their future.

Our approach is based on the belief that every young person has untapped potential. Many of the participants have struggled in traditional school environments, experienced low self-esteem, mental health challenges, or a lack of belonging. The Academy provides a safe and supportive environment where young people can experience success, develop meaningful relationships, and build the skills needed to thrive in education, work, and life.

The program combines physical activity, teamwork, workplace exploration, technology, and experiential learning. Participants are encouraged to take responsibility, overcome challenges, and strengthen key character traits such as perseverance, courage, self-discipline, and cooperation. Learning takes place through real-life experiences that create motivation, engagement, and a sense of achievement.

Working closely with schools, public services, employers, and local communities, the Academy creates pathways back into education and employment. Our results show that when young people receive the right support, guidance, and opportunities, they can achieve remarkable personal growth and long-term positive outcomes.

The Dale Oen Academy’s vision is that every young person should experience that the impossible can become possible. By empowering young people to believe in themselves and their future, we contribute to stronger individuals, healthier communities, and a more inclusive society.

About the organization

The Dale Oen Experience Foundation is a Norwegian non-profit organization dedicated to helping children and young people experience mastery, purpose, and joy through outdoor activities, education, research, and innovative learning programs. Inspired by the values and legacy of world champion swimmer Alexander Dale Oen, the foundation was established to create opportunities for young people to develop confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging.

Our vision is that every young person should experience that the impossible can become possible. We work to strengthen young people’s ability to navigate challenges, discover their potential, and build meaningful futures. Through experiential learning, personal development, and close support, we create environments where young people can grow, succeed, and thrive.

The foundation develops and operates a range of initiatives aimed at promoting inclusion, mental well-being, life skills, and active participation in society.

One of our most important initiatives is the Dale Oen Academy, a research-informed youth development program for young people who are at risk of social exclusion, school dropout, or long-term disengagement from education and employment. Through character development, mentoring, practical learning, and outdoor experiences, the Academy helps participants build confidence and prepare them for further education, work, and independent adult life.
